Ministry of Gender vows to pursue child abuse case of five-year-old boy who had hand amputated

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, has said it is keenly monitoring the fallout from the case of the five-year-old boy who lost his left hand after the cutlass wound he had from his step mother was left to fester.

The Central Regional Director of the Gender Ministry, Thywill Ekpe, said her outfit would not relent on their effort to pursue the case.

Speaking to Citi News, she said they would follow up on the issue, even as the courts have began with processes to ensure the persons involved are punished.

“We’ve started following up already. Today, I have had a discussion with the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVSSU) Regional Commander, and we will still follow up to ensure that they do whatever they have to do,” she said.

The incident took place at Ahomfie, a village near Abura Dunkawa in the Central Region about a month ago.

But the boy was deprived of any significant medical care during the period, according to reports.

The left arm of the five-year-old boy, which was said to be decomposing and had sustained irreversible nerve damage, was amputated on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, after a successful surgery at the at the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

However, the Abura Asebu Kwamankwse Magistrate Court has remanded into prison custody, Efua Abaduwa, the woman who slashed her five-year-old stepson’s hand with a cutlass.

She was given a provisional charge of causing harm and is to reappear in court on February 14, 2019, although she has explained that the cutlass cut the boy accidentally.

Also arrested in connection with the case is the father of the victim, David Mensah, aged 36, who was also remanded into prison custody by the same court to reappear on the same date.

He has been charged with abetment of crime.
