- The police have discredited information going round that eight people have died at the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency
- DSP Afia Tenge said only six people have sustained some injuries
- The Ayawaso by-election has been rocked with violence and gunshots
The police have discredited some reports making rounds that eight people have died in the violent Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
According to the public relations officer of the Accra Region, DSP Afia Tenge, the police have recorded only six people sustaining severe injuries but who are responding to treatment at the hospital.
“There's some information going out that some 8 people are dead, but that is false. 6 people have sustained some injuries, but the hospital says they are well,” DSP Tenge said as seen by YEN.com.gh on social media.
However, in a live news report monitored by YEN.com.gh on GHOne TV, two people believed to be NDC, have been confirmed them.
They were reportedly shot in the back of the head, the stomach, ribs and legs.
The NDC has condemned the attack on its members, and the national communication officer, Sammy Gyamfi, has called on the supporters to defend themselves.
According to him, Ghana’s constitution allows for self-defense in the face of attack, therefore, the NDC supporters must do same.
Meanwhile, the party has announced its decision to withdraw from the by-election.
According to the national chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo, the NDC felt unsafe after a polling station in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency was plagued with “indiscriminate shooting” and “intimidation” from the national security operatives against the NDC.
However, the NPP has blamed the chaotic situation at the constituency on the NDC.
