- In July 2018, the NDC expressed its surprise at the replacement of Charlotte Osei with Jean Mensa as chairperson of the Electoral Commission

The chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa, has responded to threats of removal of office allegedly from some members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) if it assumes power after the 2020 elections.

According to a report by Classfmnoline.com, she stated that she does not lose a minute’s sleep over such statements.

YEN.com.gh understands that the NDC has criticised the removal of Charlotte Osei from office as chairperson of the commission, and the subsequent appointment of Mensa.

According to the NDC, Mensa is a known New Patriotic Party (NPP) sympathiser, and is therefore worried that she may rig the 2020 elections in favour of the NPP.

In a press release issued on July 23, 2018, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, said the NDC received news of the nomination of Mrs Mensa with “shock and disbelief.”

“We are shocked because, until this appointment, the president had given assurance to the nation that the persons to be appointed into the commission would be those whose integrity and political neutrality would be above board," it said.

For that reason, the party is at a loss at to why contrary to President Akufo-Addo’s earlier assurances, he settled on Mensa, who is anti-NDC.

The action, they went on, defies all senses of fairness and justice and amounts to a gross abuse of the discretionary powers of appointment vested in him by the Constitution of the Republic of Ghana.

Reacting to her political tagging by the NDC and the party’s threat to remove her from office after the 2020 elections, Mensa said she cannot be bothered and goes to bed peacefully.
