Ghanaian student beats lecturers to win top international award

In an era where women are taking over and breaking barriers all over the world, Ghana has not been left behind at all.

This is in relation to an MPhil student at the University of Ghana who is currently flying the flag of Ghana high.

Lois Afua Damptey joined hundreds of people who submitted abstracts of academic work done in terms of the crystallography of the like sources manner.

This is the experimental science of determining the arrangement of atoms in crystalline solids.

Of the many entries, only 100 were selected for the Pan African Conference on Crystallography.

They were required to prepare a pictorial presentation of their academic research to a selected panel.

In the end, Lois won two top awards, as her research was adjudged the best by a jury of experts.

Her awards are from the International Centre for Diffraction Data (ICDD) and the Royal Society of Chemistry.

She was subsequently presented with a student grant for her excellent and diligent work.

Lois’ research work touched on one amazing project. She set out to find a suitable material that could convert nonedible Ghanaian oil seeds into biofuels.

Meanwhile, it must be noted that the Ghanaian student beat off competition from some PhD students and even lecturers to win her award.

I wasn’t the best in my class, I was one of the least when we got to Level 100 and one thing I know about myself is that I hate to fail,” Lois told Kuulpeeps in an interview.

So I joined study groups I wasn’t shy to go to my juniors to explain to me things I don’t understand. I had a couple of resists but just before we graduated I was the best in my class.”

She was also offered a six-month study opportunity at Aston University in the United Kingdom (UK) which would be sponsored.

I impressed and they offered me an MPhil which was a joint collaboration, so I did part of my study in the University of Ghana and part of my research study at Aston University,” she added.
