Ghana’s vice president, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has sworn-in members of a Commission of Inquiry to investigate reports of violence that plagued the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-elections.
The commission has been tasked to inquire into the circumstances of, and establish the facts leading to the events and associated violence during the by-election.
The commission is also expected to investigate any associated violence and injuries, inquire into any matter which it considers incidental or reasonably related to the causes of the events and the associated violence and injuries.
It is expected to submit its report within a month to the president. The report is expected to show the commission’s findings and recommendations, in order to help prevent future electoral violence.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his confidence in the members of the commission, and added that he hopes the work of the commission helps to curb electoral violence.
Reports of violence were recorded during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election held on Thursday, January 31, 2019.
The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, was also assaulted by security men.
