Man United boss Solskjaer wins January Premier League manager of the month

- Solskjaer replaced Mourinho in December and has remained unbeaten since then, winning nine out of his first ten matches at the club

Manchester United interim manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been voted the January Premier League of the month.

The Norwegian replaced Jose Mourinho on a temporary basis at Old Trafford in December, and has gone ten matches without a defeat in all competitions.

Solskjaer beat Burnley coach Sean Dyche and Southampton’s Ralph Hasenhuttl to the prestigious prize after the polls.

The 45-year-old has however become the first Norwegian, as a player or manager, to win a Premier League monthly award.

United claimed ten points in four matches in the month under review - with three wins over Newcastle, Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton & Hove Albion.

While their last match in the first month of the year ended in a 2-2 draw against Burnley after two late goals from Paul Pogba and Victor Lindelof secured a point for them at Old Trafford.

"It means we’ve been the team of the month, both the staff and the players, so we’ve done well," said Solskjaer.

"We want to be winning games, we want to move up the table and this is the start of it."

Solskjaer enjoyed a glittering 12-year playing career at United, winning six Premier League titles, and his transition to manager there has so far been seamless.

"The more you know the culture of the club, the culture of the players and the way that we have been successful, that has helped me," he said.

"I’ve got some fantastic coaches, I have to say, Kieran [McKenna], Michael [Carrick], they’re brilliant."

"Emilio Alvarez’s working with the best goalkeeper in the world and to bring Micky [Phelan] in with me is very reassuring because he’s so calm and experienced.

"You cannot be a good leader or a manager without good players, you can’t get results without the players, so ultimately it’s how they respond to what we tell them and they’ve been fantastic, so all credit to them."

Legit.ng recalls that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp won the December edition of the award, while Virgil Van Dijk won the player's category of the prize.

The German tactician led his Reds armies to victories in all English topflight encounters in the month under review.

They also scored 22 goals and conceded just three as they rose to the summit of the table ahead of Man City and Tottenham.
