Michael Essien named as Women’s World Cup ambassador

Ghana legend Michael Essien has been named an ambassador for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The former Chelsea midfielder is among 23 legends who have been selected to help promote this year’s tournament.

The list of ambassadors is made up of 10 males and 13 female legendary footballers from different countries.

The list includes France legend Marcel Desailly, ex-Brazil international, Gilberto Silva, former Real Madrid star, Michel Salgado, Argentina’s Esteban Cambiasso, veteran Australian striker Tim Cahill and former South Korean star Park Ji-sung.

The women ambassadors also include two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Cup winner Kristine Lilly of the United States, France’s Laura Georges and former England international turned television pundit Alex Scott.

The others are Kelly Smith, Nadine Kessler of Germany and Canada’s Karina LeBlanc.

The ambassadors are expected to drive attendances and generate engagement at the Women’s World Cup.

They are also tasked to inspire the new generation of talents to play women’s football through the initiative.

The Secretary General of FIFA, Fatma Samoura, said the target is to take the Women’s World Cup to a global audience of one billion, with the help of the ambassadors.

The eighth edition of the Fifa Women’s World Cup will be very special and it takes place at a time when women around the globe are uniting to make their voices heard,” she said.

“The tournament’s official slogan ‘Dare to Shine’ echoes the current world movement towards female empowerment and I am looking forward to seeing teams of strong and passionate women, from 24 different countries, illuminate football stadiums in France with their skill.

Our superheroes will help us to reach a global audience of one billion and make the Fifa Women’s World Cup France 2019 our biggest and best yet – for players, for fans, for local communities and for the empowerment of girls and women,” Samoura added.

The 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted by France and is slated for June 7 to July 7.
