Ghana's six new regions to be given legal backing on Tuesday

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo, will on Tuesday give legal backing to the six newly created regions.

The exercise will be undertaken through the public presentation of Constitutional Instruments backing the creation of the regions.

According to a statement issued by the Minister for Information on Saturday, February 9, 2019, chiefs and people of the newly created regions will be coming to the Jubilee House in Accra for the official ceremony.

The statement revealed that, the North East and Savannah regions will have their constitutional instruments presented first on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.

On Wednesday, February 13, 2019, the Bono East and Ahafo Regions will also have their constitutional instruments presented.

Lastly will be Western North and Oti regions who will receive theirs on Friday, 15th February 2019.

In December 2018, a referendum was held after the President proposed the creation of additional six regions.

The President argued that out of the 10 existing regions, some are lacking development due to their size and topography.

He noted that for development to reach those areas, it was necessary that six new regions be created.

A referendum held by the Electoral Commission saw a massive positive vote for the creation of the regions.

Tuesday will therefore be the official commencement of the six new regions making Ghana have 16 regions in all.

After voting massively in favor of the new regions, inhabitants of those regions are however divided over capital towns.

However, many experts have advised that the capital towns to be chosen should be towns that already have the necessary infrastructure.

They said infrastructure such as a vibrant market, good road network, stable power among others should be available in the capital towns.

While the Savannah Region inhabitants are divided over Salaga and Damongo, the people of Oti are routing for Jasikan as their capital.

In Bono East, Techiman is receiving massive support to become the regional capital while in the Ahafo Region, Goaso, Duayaw-Nkwanta, Bechem and Kenyasi are being considered.
