NDC members ‘force’ police officials to seize party chairman’s car

- Police officials have taken possession of a vehicle previously used by the Suame NDC constituency chairman

- This was after armed men reportedly demanded that he hand over the car following a ruling by a court over legitimacy of his role as chairman

- Some armed men reportedly shot at the car as it was being driven to the police station

Information available to YEN.com.gh shows that a car being used by a constituency chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Saeed Umar, has been seized by police officials.

According to a report by Citinewsroom.com, Umar, the chairman of the Suame constituency of the NDC, was asked by some party members to return the car.

This came after a Kumasi court asked him to step aside, as his victory as constituency chairman was challenged by some delegates.

The development allegedly deepened the wrangling within NDC members in the constituency as some members insisted Umar returns all properties in his possession belonging to the party.

A meeting with some constituency chairmen and delegates from the Suame and Tafo-Pankrono constituencies with one of the party’s presidential aspirants, Sylvester Mensah, was halted after a confrontation ensued between the chairman and some party supporters.

“I was late for the meeting, and when I arrived, I decided to eat before joining in. In the process, three guys confronted me and said they came to take the party’s vehicle from me,” Umar said.

His attempt to verify their argument was met with assault, as the three men pounced on him.

He then handed the keys of the car to someone to drive it to the nearest police station so that investigations into the matter could commence.

“They chased the driver on motorbikes amidst firing gunshots. When they were approaching the police station, they fired at the vehicle and deflated the tires,” he added.

The police at Suame have meanwhile taken custody of the car and have invited all those behind the disturbances to report themselves at the station on Tuesday, February 12, 2019.
