Real Madrid secured slim victory over Dutch League side Ajax Amsterdam in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League round of 16 encounter at Johan Cruijff Arena.
The hosts were the better side in most part of the game but the result at the end of the day proved otherwise.
Los Blancos broke the deadlock in the 60th minute through Frenchman Karin Benzema after connecting with Vinicius Junior who overcame two players before threading the pass that to the goal.
Fifteen minutes to the end of the meeting, Hakim Ziyech restored parity for the home team after several attempts.
But second half substitute Marco Asensio stepped up in the 87th minute to fire his side to victory as they take two away goals advantage to the second leg next month.
Coach Erik ten Hag's men got the game started on an bright note with their dominating and attacking football.
However, they were unable to break the Galacticos defence line with Sergio Ramos marshaling proceedings from his central position.
After so many tries, Ajax finally found the back of the net but the goal was ruled out by the Video Assistant Referee in the 38th minute.
As the two teams failed to put the ball in the back of the net in the first stanza of the encounter but got all the goals scored in the second.
Both sides clash for the remainder of the fixture at the Santiago Bernabeu on March 5, and the Dutch side will be hoping they can turn the result to their favour.
Meanwhile, Madrid will face a tough task ahead of the match as they battle Barcelona in the second leg of their El Clasico clash in the Spanish League this term.
It will be recalled that the first leg ended 5-1 - a match that saw the club fire their manager, Julen Lopetegui and hiring Santiago Solari last year.
