Alcoholism is described by clinical psychologists as an addiction people have to constantly get drunk, either deliberately or otherwise without recourse to occasion.
In Ghana, it is not hard to know one or two drunkards. Some of them are our own family and friends. Or even ourselves.
Alcoholics are difficult to live with because of the obvious reasons of the smell of alcohol, their incoherence, the embarrassment and the health issues they tend to pick up.
It is still very frustrating when we think that people should be able to quit drinking alcohol but somehow, they just cannot bring themselves to do it. It is worse when they do not think of themselves as drunkards.
YEN.com.gh highlights reasons why alcoholics do not usually see themselves as such.
1. They usually have a company they drink with
When there is a group where everyone is a drunkard, it is hard for one to correct another. The bar is set low by each of them and the one who drinks the most alcohol is even seen as the best.
An alcoholic cannot see what they are doing to themselves when their group members are also drunkards.
2. They give themselves reason to drink
Whether in sorrow or in joy, alcohol has become a symbol to mark the occasion. A drunkard knows this all too well.
So if they lose a job, they grab a bottle. They win a contract, they grab a bottle.
And insofar as you are alive, you will always have a reason.
3. They may be taking care of other aspects of their life
It is not difficult to find an alcoholic who is a responsible parent and a loving relative or partner. They are so socially good that no one brings up the issue of their drinking.
These people do not often see themselves as drunkards because no other person cautions them.
4. Many alcoholics are also drug users
Many researches have shown that people who are drunkards usually indulge in the usage of controlled substances too. And society is more unhappy about, for instance, marijuana than beer.
So for those who take in the two things, they may not see alcohol as a problem since the attention is very much on the drugs.
