Lydia Forson and 6 others who have become the face of "new school" feminism

At Yen.com.gh, we have been discussing what the new feminist movement or the Pepper Dem Ministries is and why it is struggling to make an impact.

Although there are a few men, it is mostly a collection of women. They are from privileged or fortunate backgrounds or are found among privileged groupings.

They are educated, social media savvy and usually want more than just “sending the girl-child to school”.

They belong to what social and political scientists would call Third Wave feminism. Basically, this brand of feminism sees the world as split between winners and losers and that the losers need a collective force to make their case.

1. Nana Ama Agyemang Asante

Broadcast journalist at Citi FM, Asante has won attention with her unrelenting challenge of Ghanaian tradition but on social media and on-air at work.

2. Lydia Forson

Lydia Forson has had cause to challenge journalists and religious leaders without any reservations. She has outgrown her occupation as an actress.

3. Adwoa Obaa Boni

Obaa Boni, as her nickname goes, is a self-identified Marxist feminist. Her trade in stock is to wear shamelessly, the image that women are shamed with in Ghanaian society.

4. Wunpini Mohammed

A scholar and activist, Mohammed is also a steadfast defender of women's rights to assume any identity they so wish. She places special emphasis on women from northern Ghana.

5. Jemila Abdulai

Perhaps, one of the most popular people on this list, Abdulai is a media genius. She has, through her work, won plaudits forhow she tells the stories of Ghanaian women.

6. Kinna Likimani

Likimani is probabaly the oldest on the list. She is not known to be confrontational but advances her thoughts through her work as an author.

7. Nii Kotei

The only man on the list, Kotei is an artist and a music scholar. He has been noted as strong voice for women's empowerment even in this male-dominated culture.
