- Efforts to see government’s agenda of ensuring that the national capital, Accra, becomes the cleanest city in the whole of Africa have been advanced.
- This is evident as Zoomlion Ghana Limited, Ghana’s biggest waste management company, has unveiled a new set of mechanical street sweepers.
- A short ceremony was held at the forecourt of the State House on Wednesday February 20, 2019 to unveil the vehicles.
The mechanical street sweepers are vehicles used to keep roads, pavements and other hard surfaces clean and free from debris.
The conventional street sweepers, numbering about 10, use jets underneath the vehicles to spray water unto the road surface.
This helps to loosen particles and reduce airborne dust. It also brushes and scrubs the dirt off the surface, while a cylindrical broom-like brush sweeps the debris onto a conveyor belt which leads to a storage container inside the vehicle.
The theme of the ceremony was ‘Delivering Effective and Efficient Service Approach to Ghana’s Waste Challenge’.
Speaking at the ceremony, The Greater-Accra Regional Minister, Honourable Ishmael Ashitey said waste should be seen as wealth.
He added that increasing the existing solid waste infrastructure is one of the priority focus areas of every assembly.
"It is the believe of the various MMDAs to look at waste management in a more holistic manner along the entire value chain of Collection, Transporting, Disposal and treatment," he added.
On her part, Minister for Local Government and Rural Development Hon. Hajia Alima Mahama said government has deepened collaborations with all players, both locally and internationally towards making Ghana’s sanitation outlook a brighter one.
This, according to her, has been done by consolidating the successes made over the years and making new efforts to reach a higher pedestal.
She further stated that the Mechanised Street Sweepers shall be stationed at the Regional Capitals and deployed along the major highways within the cities such the N1 and the N4 to augment the cleaning activities of our manual sweepers.
Hon. Alima Mahama said it is her expectation that Zoomlion Ghana Limited would effectively collaborate with all the MMDAs concerned to ensure smooth deployment of the equipment in order to maximize the associated benefits.
This innovative strategic equipment she believes with no doubt, will contribute significantly towards bringing Ghana closer to the attainment of the president’s vision of making Accra the cleanest city.
Also, Executive Chairman of Zoomlion Group of Companies, Dr. Joseph Siaw said it is in response to a national call for close partnership between government machinery and the private sector players that his outfit has been challenged to transform its operational activities to respond effectively to the president’s charge of total environmental cleanliness.
He assured traditional leaders of his commitment to intensify collaboration with them in order to reach out to the citizenry to ensure environment cleanliness.
