Politics in a democracy, by its sheer nature, means that people will be up against each other in terms of ideas and intentions of bettering their community.
Ghana is no different from any other democracy. Mass support is split between the two major political parties.
The New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have between them, controlled the affairs of Ghana since the return of democracy in 1992.
Celebrities in Ghana have also not been shy to express their support since the idea of freedom of speech became more enunciated. These celebrities come out usually in election years.
However, not all celebrities have managed to survive the backlash that comes with supporting a political party. But there a strong few.
1. Kwabena Kwabena
Kwabena Kwabena is a top-notch highlife musician. Perhaps that is why his public support for President Nana Akufo-Addo since 2008 has not really hurt his musical career.
2. Tracey Boakye
Tracey Boakye is an unapologetic admirer of former president John Dramani Mahama who hails from the NDC. However, Boakye's work in Kumasi, an NPP stronghold, is not hurt at all by her support.
3. John Dumelo
John Dumelo has been a famous actor for over a decade. The man has not rejected claims that he wants to go into politics on the ticket of the NDC.
4. Abeiku Santana
It was a surprise in 2016 when radio and TV personality, Abeiku Santana, expressed support for the NDC. But Santana has gathered so much goodwill that it is difficult for him to be unpopular.
5. Daddy Lumba
Daddy Lumba's music career spans over 30 years. He has become a legend of the highlife genre and that means that public support for the NPP can never hurt his popularity.
