8 probable candidates who can Mahama's running mate

Eight names have popped up as leading candidates to be named as John Dramani Mahama’s running-mate for the 2020 elections.

Mahama became the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) presidential aspirant-elect after beating off competition from six other candidates.

He was endorsed by over 200,000 delegates of the NDC during last Saturday’s (February 23, 2019) presidential primaries held at the various constituencies across the country.

The ex-president polled a whopping 213,487 votes, representing 95.23% of the total votes cast.

The other contestants – Prof. Joshua Alabi, Alban Bagbin, Goosie Tanoh, Dr. Ekwow Spio Garbrah, Sylvester Mensah and Nurudeen Iddrisu – had 5% of the votes combined.

However, Mahama is yet to announce his running-mate despite a hot of names being speculated around.

None of the six failed aspirants will be named running-mate of the NDC.

Rather, the report indicates that eight names have popped up as the likely candidates to be picked as Mahama’s Vice Presidential candidate for 2020.

The list includes, in no particular order,

1. Former Attorney General, Marrietta Appiah-Opong Brew

2. Kwesi Ahwoi

3. Former Bank of Ghana Deputy Governor Dr Johnson Asiama

4. Julius Debrah

5. Former Foreign Minister, Hannah S. Tetteh

6. Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang

7. Dr Kwesi Botchwey who was Chairman of the National Development Planning Commission under Mahama

8. MP for Korley Klottey Dr. Zanetor Rawlings.

This comes after the Alliance for Social Equity and Public Accountability (ASEPA) also tipped former Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Asiama, to become the running-mate of Mahama.

ASEP’s report said Dr. Asiama stands a better chance of becoming Mahama’s running-mate than any other member of the NDC.

The report said some of the factors considered included, Education, Ethnicity, personality and connection to the grassroots.
