Meet the Ghanaian footballers who grew up poor but now rich

Most of the Ghanaian footballers who are rich now have poor beginnings but with the right mentality, they broke the chain of poverty.

These footballers struggled before making it to the top and now they are regarded as some of the richest footballers in the world.

1. Christian Atsu

Atsu currently plies his trade for Newcastle. His move from an ordinary little boy on the streets of Accra to being one of the country’s respected soccer players is incredible. He said growing up in Accra for him was tough as his family had “very little money and very little food”.

He had to resort to selling sachet water to earn some extra money to support his family.

Today he is valued at $12m. He has previously played for clubs like, FC Porto, Chelsea and Bournemouth.

2. Sulley Muntari

Muntari had a patchy life when growing up but with the talent given to him by God, the midfielder has used that to amass some wealth.

He was born in Konongo in the Ashanti Region but moved to Accra at age 16. He never looked back as he has played for some of the top football clubs in the world.

He currently plies his trade in the Spanish second-tier for Albacete.

Muntari can now boast of expensive cars and plush mansions.

3. Stephen Appiah

Former Black Stars player Stephen Appiah was born in Chorkor, a fishing community in Accra. His parents were not rich but he didn't despair as he kept his focus.

At age 15, he was part of Ghana’s team that won the 1993 U-17 World Cup, after the tournament, he had his break through having played for clubs like, Juventus, Fenerbahce, Udinese. and the like

He is currently the Black Stars Technical Coordinator. He is regarded as one of the richest Ghanaian footballers in history.

4. Michael Essien

The former Chelsea midfielder is arguably the richest Ghanaian footballer. Essien has played for clubs like Real Madrid, Lyon, AC Milan, etc.

The former Black Stars box-to-box midfielder is currently valued at $35 million. He never came from a rich home but because of his footballing talent, he has amassed lots of properties.

5. Mubarak Wakaso

Wakaso’s name can’t be excluded when naming Ghanaian footballers who are rich.

He was born in Obuasi but he made sure that he will become a prominent person by taking his football career serious.

After he was drafted into Ashanti Gold team in 2004, he has never disappointed.

Wakaso now plies his trade in the Spanish top-flight for Alaves and he is one of the best midfielders in the ongoing campaign.
