A number of Ghanaian showbiz personalities, especially in the movie and music industries, are known and often described as celebrities.
But highlife musician Kwaisey Pee has stated that there is no real celebrity in Ghana
In an interview on Hitz FM on Thursday, February 28, 2019, the Mehia Odo hitmaker explained that the financial and social status of people referred to as celebrities in the West and those in Ghana clearly show that no Ghanaian qualifies to be called so in Ghana.
For him, not even the likes Daddy Lumba, Sarkodie, Shatta Wale, and Stonebwoy had the wherewithal to be called celebrities.
"We don’t have celebrities in Ghana. I have lived in the Western world and when we talk about celebrities we know. It’s the other way round here. I don’t consider myself as one. I wanna get to where they will call you that. It’s self-professed in Ghana. There is no celebrity in Ghana. They don’t have what it takes,” Kwaisey Pee insisted.
According to him, the only person who came close to being a celebrity in Ghana was Menzgold’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nana Appiah Mensah popularly known as NAM1, because “he had a private jet and all the luxurious cars.”
Apart from NAM1, Kwaisey Pee also felt some pastors are close to attaining the celebrity status because “they have the bodyguards, mansions and luxurious properties."
“The artistes are only trying [to catch up the celebrity status],” he added.
