The national chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has spoken for the first time since his alleged audio tape was leaked.
Speaking at a press conference held at the NDC’s headquarters in Adabraka in Accra on Thursday, February 28, 2019, Mr. Ampofo said all party executives are working hard to ensure that John Mahama wins the 2020 elections.
Although he did not touch on the issue of the controversial leaked audio, the NDC chairman said the party is ready to use all of its structures and machinery to ensure victory in 2020.
“[There’s a role for] everybody to play, so that together we will work assiduously and capture power from the NPP administration. Once again I would like to commend all of you and assure you that we will work hand-in-gloves with you and support our flagbearer to deliver a massive victory for the NDC come December 2020,” Mr. Ampofo said.
According to him, Mahama has an unfinished agenda at the presidency and deserves a chance to finish what he started come 2020.
A win for Mahama, he said, is the only thing that would restore hope to Ghanaians.
“We believe that by the 7th of January 2021, this country will be swearing in a new President. And that new president will be no other person than His Excellency John Dramani Mahama.
“We want to use this occasion also to assure him of the readiness of the party to put all the structures and machinery of the party to support the campaign and ensure that your [Mahama] unfinished agenda, which was painfully truncated in December 2016, will be restored and hope once again will be restored to Ghanaians,” he added.
The NDC press conference was attended by former president Mahama, NDC general secretary Johnson Asiedu Nketia, as well as all defeated flagbearer aspirants and other newly-elected executives.
The content of the leaked tape has drawn widespread criticism from a section of the public, with many condemning the NDC chairman.
Mr. Ampofo is also heard saying that party communicators are free to insult the Peace Council Chairman, Professor Emmanuel Asante.
The NDC chairman has since been invited by the Police CID to assist in investigations regarding the said tape.
