A furore has broken out on what is often described as Ghana Twitter after a user thought his appeal for 30,000 retweets would earn him a Kantanka car but after securing the retweets, it turns out the challenge to him was from a parody account.
The parody account @kantanka_daily in May of 2018 challenged @godfather_gh to get 30,000 retweets so that @godfather_gh could get a Kantanka Mensah, one of the models of the cars assembled by Kantanka Automobile.
The challenged Twitter user then went to town on the platform, pleading with anyone who cared to help get to the number. Finally in February of 2019, the 30,000 retweets were reached by @godftaher_gh.
But @godfather_gh's excitement was cut short when the official Twitter account of Kantanka, @KantankaAuto, issued a disclaimer saying they had nothing to do with the challenge and that "Kantanka Automobile will not be responsible for any liability should this message be ignored."
This disclaimer obviously sent wave after wave of reactions, from mockery of the user who got challenged but mainly, disdain for the car-assembling company.
Apart from waiting for the challenge to play out, thereby putting their brand name out there, Kantanka Automobile boss, Kwadwo Safo Jr., tweeted at a point and even mentioned the parody account @kantanka_daily.
For many people, Safo Jr.'s citation of the parody account was a stamp of legitimacy even if we are not sure the challenge over Twitter was contractually binding.
It is not hard to imagine that this case paradoxically made Kantanka the top trending topic on Ghana Twitter. But mostly for the wrong reasons.
Some attacked the person of Kantanka founder, Apostle Kwadwo Safo.
Others warned of a physical protest if Kantanka did not give the car to @godfather_gh.
Some also wondered why Kantanka did not take advantage of the mishap to get their name into the good books of Ghanaians seeing that they are rather infamous on social media.
Meanwhile, since the issue broke out, @godfather_gh has been on the receiving end of offers from food, drinks, clothing and toiletry brands as compensation for the embarrassment perhaps caused him.
