Ethiopian Airlines plane with 157 on board crashes on way to Kenya

An Ethiopian Airlines plane carrying 149 passengers and eight crew members from Addis Ababa has crashed on its way to Nairobi, Kenya.

According to a spokesman said the plane crashed around 08:44 local time on Sunday, after taking off at the Bole International Airport six minutes earlier.

According to a statement released by the airline, there is no information on survivors or casualties yet but search and rescue efforts operations are already in progress.

"Ethiopian Airlines staff will be sent to the accident scene and will do everything possible to assist the emergency services," the statement added.

Meanwhile, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has sent condolences to the family and friend of the people who may have lost their lives in the accident.

Being the first person to comment on the crash, the prime minister's official Twitter account posted: "The Office of the PM, on behalf of the Government and people of Ethiopia, would like to express it’s deepest condolences to the families of those that have lost their loved ones on Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 737 on regular scheduled flight to Nairobi, Kenya this morning."
