Here are five ways to survive a plane crash according to science:

1.    Dress appropriately

Not many times do we hear of person surviving plane crashes, but one way to increase chances of survival is to dress appropriately before boarding the flight.

Wear clothes that are likely to protect you in case of fire. Better to go for long trousers and long-sleeve shirts to protect you from flames and sharp objects.

Also, put on laser shoes which would aid you in case you need to run. Do well to avoid high-heel shoes when boarding a plane.

2.    Choose safer seats

You must be wondering where to find the safest place to sit in a plane. Popular mechanics suggest that sitting as the far back of the plane is much safer.

In case of a crash, you have better chance of survival than those in front, unless the plane goes tail first during the said crash.

But most importantly, know where the emergency exits are, so that you will not struggle to find your way in case anything happens.

3.    Stay awake during take-off and landing

It is believed that the first three minutes after take-off and the last eight minutes before landing are the most accident prone times for any flight.

It is therefore appropriate to keep your seatbelts on and be in position at these times to stay safe. Also pay attention to the emergency instructions, even if you have used a plane several times in the past.

4.    Don’t panic

Whenever there is a plane crash, make sure you remain calm no matter the seriousness of the accident.

Many passengers often get too scared that they even forget how to unbuckle their seatbelts. This could be disastrous.

If the oxygen mask drops down, make sure you put on one first, before trying to help others. This is because you often have just 10 seconds before you pass out if there is an explosion.

5.    Forget your possessions

The first rule in surviving any accident, be it a car, motorbike or plane crash, is to save yourself first before thinking about your luggage.

If you get the least chance to evacuate the plane, be fast enough to exit, rather than try to retrieve your belongings along.
