5 things about Gerald Asamoah you need to know

On Sunday, March 17, 2019, YEN.com.gh reported that Ghanaian-born Gerald Asamoah had been appointed team manager for Bundesliga side Schalke 04.

Asamoah is a former striker of Schalke 04 and he has returned to the team as technical person.

For many Ghanaians, they are happy about the role given to the former footballer.

1. Born in Mampong

The ex-footballer was born in Mampong in the Ashanti Region. His family migrated to Germany in 1990.

Asamoah holds dual citizenship, meaning he is a Ghanaian and a German.

2. First African-born black to get a top job in Bundesliga

Following Asamoah’s appointment as team manager for Schalke 04, he becomes the first African-born black to get a top job in the Bundesliga.

3. First African-born black to play for the German national team

In 2001, Asamoah made history as he became the first African-born black to play for the German national team.

He played his first game for Germany in a game against Slovakia. He scored on his debut, and went on to play in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups.

4. Business in Ghana

Despite playing for Germany, Asamoah has invested in Ghana. He is the owner of a plush hotel called Asa Royal.

The hotel is located in Accra near the Trade Fair Center.

5. Personal life

Asamoah is married and has two children, twins Jada and Jaden (born 26 February 2007).

He suffers from a heart condition, hypertrophic non-obstructive cardiomyopathy. In his case, the flesh lobe that separates the right and left heart chambers is extremely thick, which can cause an arrhythmic heartbeat
