Owner of Shatta Movement Bar arrested in "Akpeteshie Competition" death case

Police in Kwesimintsim in the Western region have arrested a pub owner in whose establishment a man died after allegedly consuming copious amounts of alcohol in a drinking competition.

Kojo Isaac, a pub owner in whose pub a drinking competition led to the death of a 25-year-old mason in the Western region, has reportedly been arrested by the police to assist in investigation.

Isaac is for now, being treated as a suspect because police are not entirely in the know as to how the deceased, Obeng Hamza, could have been killed by locally-distilled gin, akpeteshie.

On Friday, March 29, 2019, YEN.com.gh reported that Obeng Hamza and one Gyentia, participated in a drinking competition that saw them gulping akpeteshie in obscene volumes.

But additional report from Starrfm.com.gh says the competition at the Shatta Movement Bar held for the winner, a GHC 10 reward.

Initially, the pub owner Kojo Isaac Eshun, said the deceased and his friend Gyentia came to his bar around 9am on the morning of Friday, March 29, 2019. The pair ordered for a full bottle of Akpeteshie.

The pub owner further revealed that the two in no time consumed the drink and ordered for another round in apparent competition of who gives up first.

He said Hamza was suddenly weak and started sweating profusely so he (Eshun) raised alarm for help.

But Hamza was pronounced dead at the clinic while his friend responded to treatment.

A brother-in-law of Hamza however said the deceased had brought shame to the family and therefore could not be buried according to Islamic custom and tradition. Islam forbids the consumption of alcohol.
