Lecturer raises alarm over new bill; vows to resist attempts to stifle academic freedom

Information available to YEN.com.gh shows that a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Professor Yaw Gyampo, has vowed to resist attempts by the government to stifle academic freedom.

According to him, a draft Public Universities Bill is an attempt to give the government control and administration of public universities.

“Per the draft bill I have read, the government is seeking to reduce the composition of the Public University Councils from the average of 15 to 9.

With this number, the government wants to appoint more people than other constituents,” he said.

Per a report by Myjoyonline.com, he went on to say that the move is the first step at mortgaging the independence and freedom of academic institutions.

In his opinion, with a government controlled council, people critical of government can be dealt with in any way, and would lead to a relapse of independent minds into a culture of silence.
