The path to success is not an easy one and as Samuel Owuraku shows, sometimes, your path may lie with doing unconventional things like roasting ripe plantain.

Samuel Owuraku is a young man who has identified a niche by selling his roasted plantain, just like most other people, but with a uniform and a hat while wearing spectacles.

In Ghana, most people who roast plantain for sale are women so Owuraku is already working in a territory where he is in the minority. But the young man is not letting that weigh him down.

"Most of my friends told me I was sinking low when I told hem I wanted to roast plantains for sale. They told me that's a woman's job", Owuraku told

Owuraku is a native of Adansi Fomena in the Ashanti region of Ghana. And just like thousands of other Ghanaians with dreams, he came to Accra to pursue economic independence.

He had to make make do with menial jobs.

"Young people in this country complain about unemployment without looking at what they may do for themselves," said Owuraku.

"I even had the same problem. I had reservations about roasting plantain for sale but now, it's turned out to be good business. Alternatively, if I had not gone into this business, I would have been starving and probably gone into robbery."

On the way in which he presents himself to sell his plantain, Owuraku says it is part of the packaging.

For a man with limited formal education, he says he understands that people are moved by sight in terms of what they buy. Even a low quality item could sell for so much if it is presented attractively.

Owuraku is full of hope for the future especially when he recounts how modestly he began. He started his business with a gift of just GHC 100 in addition to what he had saved.

"I hope to see major changes in my life in two or two and a half years, I did not grow up looking to roast plantain for sale. But I have accepted this fate and look forward to a much brighter future".
