This happened in the vicinity of the Fiesta Royale Hotel, at Dzorwulu in Accra last Friday. And the victim (name withheld) was taken to the Accra Police Hospital by some good-hearted persons.

The Accra Regional Police Command has begun a search for the suspected robbers who escaped the scene on a motorbike after gunning the victim.

On Thursday, April 11, 2019, the victim told the police he received a call from an unknown caller who requested $60,000 in exchange for its cedi equivalent, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Accra Regional Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Effia Tenge, confirmed.

The victim intimated he knew his clients and claimed there was something distrustful about this particular caller - which prompted him to ignore the caller.

His decision to disregard the caller was also because the caller refused to disclose where he got his (victim’s) contact.

A follow-up call came through the next day requesting same amount of money.

They both agreed to meet at the Airport Police station after the victim suggested a specific location or any other police station, DSP Tenge accounted.

She said the victim got to the Airport Police Station at the agreed time but the caller delayed and failed to show up.

He dialed the number that called him the day prior to request the money and the recipient told him (the victim) that he was lodging at the Fiesta Royale Hotel. Indicating that the money was too huge to be carried around.

Shooting

He asked the victim to meet him at the Fiesta Royale Hotel because it was closer to his bank, where he would withdraw the cedi equivalent.

Upon arriving at the Fiesta Royale Hotel, he called the unknown number and obliged to the receiver’s request that he gives a brief description of himself, including the colour of shirt he was wearing.

The victim said a man approached him and identified himself as the one who had been calling him and immediately pulled a gun, ordered him (the victim) to hand over the bag he had at his back.

The robber fired random shots after he refused to comply. Fear clutched the victim, who attempted to run into the reception of the hotel but was shot by the suspected robber.

After gunning the victim, the suspected robber snatched the bag thinking it was packed with the expected money and dashed off on a waiting motorbike.

Some police officers on duty at a traffic intersection close to the Fiesta Royale Hotel who heard the gunshots joined some persons close to the scene and arranged for the victim to be taken to the Police Hospital while they placed distress calls to the police control room.

DSP Tenge confirmed the victim, who was admitted at the Police Hospital, has since been discharged.
