Akoto Ampaw 'defends' closure of Radio Gold, XYZ

Private legal practitioner, Akoto Ampaw, has defended the decision of the National Communication Authority to shut down two radio station, Radio Gold and Radio XYZ.

He seems not to have a problem with the closure.

Speaking on the sidelines of the launch of St. Augustines College’s 90th Anniversary, he stated that even though there is freedom of expression, Ghana is a society governed by laws.

“If the radio station has been shut down for reasons of authorisation and it can be demonstrated that there are no other radio stations that fall in the same bracket but have not been shut down then I don’t think that there is a problem,” he told JoyNews

The National Communications Authority (NCA) on Thursday, May 10, 2019, closed two radio stations in Accra for defaulting in renewing their licenses.

The two radio stations, Radio Gold and Radio XYZ, are both known to be affiliated to the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

The development comes in the wake of the invitation of the National Democratic Congress chairman Samuel Ofosu Ampofo over some recent crimes in the country.

Meanwhile, the Ghana Independence Broadcasters Association-GIBA has described the decision of the National Communication Authority to shut down Radio Gold and Radio XYZ, as too harsh.
