Ghana national football team captain, Asamoah Gyan, has threatened to recuse himself from potential selection for the upcoming AFCON 2019 in Egypt and retire from the national team as well.
Ghana's highest national team goalscorer and captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, submitted via his Twitter page on May 20, 2019 that he is retiring from the national team if certain conditions are not met.
The Kayserispor striker also noted in a long and touching letter that he was recusing himself from any potential selection for the upcoming African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt if he is denied the captaincy at the tournament.
He noted that that he "could not pretend to be happy" over how unfortunate he believes he has been treated by sections of the media.
Gyan also continued that "if the decision of the coach is to give captaincy of the tournament to another player while I am named in the team for the tournament, I wish to recuse myself from the tournament".
The 52-time goalscorer also added that if he is not made captain for the tournament, he would like to retire permanently "not pretending my presence would not fuel the purported undermining the country has seen under my captaincy."
Ghanaians on Twitter predictably have weighed into the fray discussing what might have spurred Gyan to his decision.
Although other news platforms are reporting that Gyan is leaving the national team, YEN.com.gh believes the player's letter is more of a threat than a certain action.
