- The EC has announced June 7 to June 27, 2019 as the period for the limited voters' registration exercise
- It has also announced that district level elections would take place on December 10, 2019
The Electoral Commission (EC) has revealed that it intends to organise the limited voters’ registration in selected areas between June 7 and June 27, 2019.
YEN.com.gh understands that the new areas would serve as centres in addition to the EC’s district offices.
The decision comes after the National Democratic Congress (NDC) resisted an initial plan by the EC and accused it of attempting to disenfranchise voters.
The NDC called for a decentralization of the exercise so that it extended to the electoral area level, rather than just the 260 district offices.
A former district chief executive (DCE) for Sekyere Afram-Plains in the Ashanti Region, Donkor Fuseini, also petitioned the EC, to extend the limited voter registration exercise to the electoral areas in the Sekyere Afram-Plains constituency, because of its difficult terrain and island communities.
The EC chair, Jean Mensa, explained that the decision would enable citizens and qualified applicants located in riverine, distant and difficult areas who want to take advantage of the registration process to do so.
According to a report by Citinewsroom.com, the EC has also announced December 10, 2019 as the date for the district level elections.
This is to happen concurrently with the referendum on the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives.
