Lovely photos of Sally Hayfray, Ghanaian and first wife of former Zimbabwean president, Robert Mugabe, has left some social media users awed while others couldn’t resist leaving a comment under the oldies photos.

Born in 1931 and comes from Apowa, in the Western Region of present day Ghana, Sally met Mugabe at a teacher training college and soon asserted herself as a fervent political campaigner.

The pair got married in 1961 and two years later Sally gave birth to a son, Nhamodzenyika, who died of malaria when he was three years old.

Following the death of Nhamo and the imprisonment of her husband, Sally sought exile in the UK, where she worked for the Africa Center until her visa expired in 1970.
Due to her role in liberating Zimbabwe from colonial rule, Mrs. Sally Mugabe is referred to as Amai (Mother) in Zimbabwe and is also regarded as mother of Zimbabwe.
She died in 1992 of kidney failure.
