- Shatta Wale's management team has released a statement apologising for the scuffle at the 2019 VGMA
- The statement also recounted events leading to the brawl with Stonebwoy's and his team
The management of Shatta Wale has officially apologised for the brawl that happened between their camp and that of Stonebwoy at the 2019 Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA 2019) on Saturday, May 18, 2019.
A statement from the team sighted by YEN.com.gh read: “Management of Shatta Wale wishes to render a sincere apology to all patrons of the 20th edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), viewers of the event around the world, organizers of the awards, Charterhouse Productions, title sponsors, Vodafone Ghana and all Shatta Movement fans worldwide for the unfortunate incident that happened during the recently held VGMA. We further apologize for all the inconveniences caused on the night and afterwards.”
According to the statement released on Tuesday, May 21, 2019, to clarify the events leading to the commotion, Shatta Wale had arrived late for the programme due to circumstances beyond his control and had decided to sit with his fans in the regular ticket section.
While there, he got information from his father who was at the VIP section that one minister wanted to meet him. He decided to uses the time of Stonebwoy's award to move to the VIP side in order to get little attention for his movement.
On their way to the VIP, one of Shatta Wale's team members suggested that they got on stage to congratulate Stonebwoy in a show of unity.
But Shatta Wale and his team were resisted from getting on the stage by Stonebwoy's manager Blakk Cedi.
"After the announcement of the winner of the Reggae Dancehall Musician of the year category, Shatta Wale decided to reposition to the VIP section to meet his father and a dignitary who had asked to see him. A member of his entourage then suggested to him to join Stonebwoy on stage to congratulate him on his win in the spirit of unity, as he had done at the 2015 4Syte Music Video awards. He agreed and asked his security team to lead him onto the stage only to be met with confrontation instigated by Blakk Cedi, manager of Stonebwoy," the statement said.
The statement further disclosed that contrary to suggestions that Shatta Wale wanted to mar the event, the dancehall star had put in too much effort in promoting the show for him to have turned around to mar it.
"We wish to state that Shatta Wale accepted a call from Charterhouse to join forces to make the 20th anniversary of the VGMA memorable and has over the period demonstrated his commitment to this course by performing at the VGMA Nominees Jam in Kumasi and VGMA Experience Concert at the Independence Square. Shatta Wale extensively campaigned for votes and promoted the anniversary celebration using his various social media platforms. It will be very illogical for him to deliberately act in a manner to ruin and mar the same event he has spent a lot of resources to promote and urged his fans to attend. Shatta Wale meant no harm and considers this incident as unfortunate."
As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh, Stonebwoy had been called on stage to receive the Reggae-Dancehall Artiste of the Year award beating Shatta Wale, Samini, and others.
Unexpectedly, Shatta Wale who was seated in the crowd decided to show up on the stage during Stonebwoy's speech and it turned into a very chaotic situation leading to Stonebwoy pulling a gun.
The altercation brought the event to a halt for a lot of minutes before calm was restored and the two were picked up to help in police investigations. They spent Sunday night in police custody and were granted bails on Monday.
