Gyan had initially rejected the role of General Captain and decided to recuse himself from selection ahead of the tournament.

In a statement, the Kayserispor striker also announced his retirement from the national team after being stripped off the captaincy.

However, the 33-year-old later rescinded his decision to retire following closed-door talks with President Akufo-Addo.

Speaking on GBC’s Radio’s Behind the News, spokesperson for Gyan, Kweku Obeng, said the striker sends his congratulations to Ayew on being named new Black Stars captain.

What I can promise Ghanaians is that, former captain Asamoah Gyan is very happy and all he wants to say is that, he congratulates André Dede Ayew and Kwadwo Asamoah for taking this position, and we are with them.

“In fact, they have been with us all these years when we were captaining the national team,” he is quoted as saying.
