General captain of the Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has finally congratulated Andre Ayew on becoming the new substantive captain of the national team.
Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah officially named Ayew as the new captain of the team, bringing an end to speculations.
The decision came after the 58-year-old told Gyan that he will not captain Ghana at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Gyan had initially rejected the role of General Captain and decided to recuse himself from selection ahead of the tournament.
In a statement, the Kayserispor striker also announced his retirement from the national team after being stripped off the captaincy.
Speaking on GBC’s Radio’s Behind the News, spokesperson for Gyan, Kweku Obeng, said the striker sends his congratulations to Ayew on being named new Black Stars captain.
According to him, Gyan is happy and will continue to give his all for the Ghana national team.
“What I can promise Ghanaians is that, former captain Asamoah Gyan is very happy and all he wants to say is that, he congratulates André Dede Ayew and Kwadwo Asamoah for taking this position, and we are with them.
“In fact, they have been with us all these years when we were captaining the national team,” he is quoted as saying.
Obeng added, on behalf on Gyan: “We are pledging our massive support, especially in this particular campaign and the objective is that we need to bring the trophy here and that is what we hope for.”
