Don’t help non-Ghanaians register for Ghana Card – Addo-Akufo charges Ghanaians in Diaspora

President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians living in the diaspora, to be vigilant and ensure that non-Ghanaians do not register for the Ghana Card when the National Identification Authority (NIA) starts issuing the cards to Ghanaians in the Diaspora in 2020.

He said it was the collective responsibility of every Ghanaian to ensure that no foreign national possesses the Ghana card through fraudulent means.

President Akufo-Addo made this known while interacting with a cross-section of Ghanaians living in Vienna, Austria, Monday, May 27, 2019.

“We should value our citizenship. It is a great pride for me that I am a Ghanaian, and that is why, after years of working and living abroad, I never went for French or British citizenship, although I was entitled to it, because I am very proud of being a Ghanaian,” he added.

He explained that once non-Ghanaians got hold of the Ghana Card, it would be conclusive that they were Ghanaians.

He indicated that the plan was that the domestic issuance would be completed by the end of the year and then the (NIA) would turn its attention to Ghanaians in the Diaspora.

The National Identification Authority boss, Professor Ken Attafuah, has revealed that the card could become the passport with which Ghanaians would travel to Europe and other parts when Ghana signs a protocol with the European Union.

This he said is because, the card, was embedded with so much more than the average passport of ID card currently in the system for use by Ghanaians.
