Ghana to give citizenship to 200 African-Americans in the year of return

The government of Ghana is going to grant citizenship to 200 African-Americans as part of the country's commemoration of the 400th anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans on plantations.

The government of Ghana launched the “Year of Return, Ghana 2019" , in a quest to encourage African Americans and the black diaspora to return to the country, and so in commemoration, the government of Ghana is giving citizenship to 200 African-Americans.

According to Face2faceafrica.com, as part of the yearlong celebrations, President Nana Akufo-Addo, will confer citizenship to 200 members of the African-American-Caribbean Diaspora group currently settled in Ghana.

The conferment will take place in June 2019, according to the director of diasporan affairs at the office of the president and chairman of the Year of Return steering committee, Akwesi Awua-Ababio.

Ghana is the only country in the 21st century that has legally offered to resettle people of African descent in Africa.

In the year 2000, Ghana became the first African country to officially open its doors to people of African descent from all over the world.

The West African country passed the “Right of Abode” law which allows any person of African descent to apply and be granted the right to stay in Ghana indefinitely.
