The Member of Parliament (MP) for Sagnarigu constituency in the Northern Region, Alhaji A.B.A Fuseini, has advised his constituents and as well as other people to stop burdening MPs with their financial pressures for their earnings cannot cater for everybody.
Alhaji Fuseini said, MPs were not able to make proper savings because constituents expected them to cater for their responsibilities whether they were capable or not.
The outspoken lawmaker said MPs are expected not only to give monies to constituents when their businesses collapse but to offer support during funerals, weddings and provision of sand for the building of their houses.
Speaking in an interview with Joy FM, he pointed out that 'MPs are burdened with all these responsibilities and in the face of it how much is MPs earnings’.
‘Our politics is increasingly monetized, to the point that the pressure is on the MPs to provide anything. I’m telling you as we speak, MPs are supposed to be building houses for people in some constituents, they will ask you for cement, roofing sheets, wood, they will ask you for even sand, in addition to school fees, funerals, weddings, personal problems, just mention it.
MPs are burdened with all these responsibilities and in the face of it how much is MPs earnings,’ he bemoaned.
The MP for Sagnarigu constituency observed that some of the MPs run into huge debts due to the pressures from their constituents.
He said it a wrong public perception that Members of Parliament (MPs) are rich and are to be relied on for financial support.
According to him, majority of his colleagues have become destitute after leaving Parliament, saying apart from ex-gratia they don’t have any retirement packages.
