Afia Pokuaa, the energetic presenter on Adom FM, has revealed that as a result of a diligence and dedication to her job, she has lost marriage proposals from men whose families were not enthusiastic about what she does.
Adom FM newscaster and political show host, Afia Pokuaa, popularly known Vim Lady, has revealed she has had to endure the loss of marriage proposals because families of some men who proposed to her do not like her.
Vim Lady is known as an energetic and vocal critic of power. Her relentless attitude toward interviewees means that she has garnered her fame from many a layman in the streets.
According to Oneminutegh.com, Pokuaa made her personal story known while addressing an audience at the maiden anniversary lecture series of the Alliance for Women in Media.
She was speaking on misconceptions and controversies that surround women in the Ghanaian media space.
Vim Lady was quoted as saying: “…There are a lot of misconceptions, so there’s a system that we need to break to get women there. Once they find themselves even in the media, what are the support systems there? None.”
The award-winning journalist noted that breaking barriers and hosting a radio political show for over a decade in a local language may appear inspiring but it may be damaging on a personal level.
She continued: "And I’m doing it in Akan, very brutal not just ordinarily brutal in English but very brutal. So I’ve been called all sorts of names.
I’ve lost marriage proposals because of that. Yes… ‘My son can’t marry a woman who is loud, so my son can’t be with you.' I’ve heard a lot of that.”
Vim Lady is among many female journalists in Ghana who have reported of similar personal costs to their job.
