Information available to YEN.com.gh shows that five people have been arrested in connection with the disappearance of 10 containers of canned tomato paste from the Tema Port.
The canned tomatoes disappeared on Thursday, May 30, 2019, as the consignment was being transferred for gazetting and subsequent auctioning.
The suspects have been identified as Alex Brako of Oslo Shipping, Alfred Frimpong, a customs preventive officer, Daniel Agyapong, a national security operative, Ama Serwaa Sarpong and Rebecca Naki Ayumah.
YEN.com.gh understands that the suspects have since been granted bail. Reports show that they received and transported some of the consignment to Kumasi in the Ashanti region, after allegedly buying them from the clearing agents.
Starrfm.com.gh reports that the commander of the unit, Chief Superintendent Joseph Antwi-Ababio, said his outfit had made a request to the Tema Command of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), to provide it with further details on the processes that led to the alleged diversion of the containers.
They have also indicated their interest in the respective roles the suspects played in order to divert the tomato paste.
According to him, eight of the containers had been retrieved and examined, to ensure that they correspond with the items listed on the bill of lading.
