- National Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, has been arrested
- He is alleged to have been arrested over arson and kidnapping charges against him
The police have arrested the national Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Samuel Ofosu Ampofo in connection with alleged arson and kidnappings in Ghana.
According to a Joy News report, the NDC national Chairman is in the custody of the police at the headquarters in Accra.
The arrest comes after Mr Ampofo’s refusal to honour an invitation to report to the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah, to assist in investigations into the recent spate of kidnappings and arson in the country.
He is also alleged to have declined an invitation by the police.
The NDC in a statement issued on Sunday, June 9, 2019, and signed by its Director of Communications, Kakra Essamuah, described the police invitation as “political harassment” and “intimidation”.
Mr. Ofosu Ampofo is standing trial over a leaked tape in which a voice purported to be his is heard calling for political kidnappings and character assassination of some persons in Ghana.
In the leaked audio, the NDC Chairman is heard purportedly declaring ruthless war against the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC), Jean Mensa.
There has been series of kidnappings since the leaked tape surfaced. Three girls from Takoradi in the Western Region have remained in captivity since they were kidnapped some months ago.
Meanwhile, the NDC has called on its followers to remain calm and patient.
The General Secretary of the opposition party, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, in a statement assured the supporters that the “full complement of the party’s legal team is in touch with the police and is closely monitoring the situation.”
