The National Identification Authority (NIA) has disclosed that non-Ghanaians can acquire the Ghana Card only under one condition.
A statement issued by NIA’s head of corporate affairs, Francis Palmdeti, revealed, “a person who is a citizen of Ghana and a citizen of another country is entitled to apply for, and be issued with, the Ghana Card.
A citizen of another country may subsequently become a Ghanaian citizen after going through the requisite process of naturalisation or registration as provided for by law.”
Peacefmonline.com reports that the clarification followed the acquisition of the Ghana Card by a Togo national, Wilfried Amenovideto, which has created furore on social media.
According to the statement, Amenovideto possesses both Ghanaian and Togolese identity cards.
NIA added that the Ghana Card issued to him is genuine, as he holds both Ghanaian and Togolese citizenships.
It went on to say a citizen of another country may subsequently become a Ghanaian citizen after going through the requisite process of Naturalisation or Registration as provided for by law.
Palmdeti’s statement also revealed that there are many foreigners living in Ghana who, through the Ministry for the Interior, have obtained Ghanaian citizenship through either registration or naturalization.
