Michel Platini arrested over allegation of awarding World Cup 2022 to Qatar

Michel Platini has been arrested over the awarding of the 2022 World Cup to Qatar in December 2010.

The 63-year-old was elected as UEFA president in 2007 until he was banned by the FIFA Ethics Committee for a series of breaches in 2015.

According to Mediapart, Platini was taken into custody on Tuesday morning, June 18, as part of the investigation into the awarding of the World Cup to the oil-rich nation.

It is understood that the French legend was taken to the premises of the Anti-Corruption Office of the Judicial Police (OCLCIFF).

When Qatar was named as the hosts of the World Cup in 2022, there have been a number of controversies giving the hosting rights to the Middle East nation.

Allegations of corruption and bribery within FIFA top-ranked officials have raised questions over the legitimacy of the bid from Qatar.

Ten of the 22-man FIFA executive committee who voted on the host nations of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups have been banned or serving a ban for corruption breaches.

The World Cup for the first time was later moved to the winter because of the intensity of the heat during the summer in the Gulf region.

Meanwhile, YEN.com.gh had earlier reported that Ahmad Ahmed, CAF president has reportedly been arrested in the early hours of Thursday, June 6, over financial and tax allegations.

The 59-year-old was said to have been taken into custody by the authorities at his Berri Hotel room in Paris where he is currently attending FIFA congress.
