They have both won the Ballon d'Or award fives times each, and they are also in the run to win the next crown.

Ronaldo has found a fair amount of success with Portugal winning Euro 2016 and the Nations League, while Messi has never won a major international trophy with Argentina.

But one major trophy which remains a nightmare for the duo of Lionel Messi and Cristiano is the World Cup in which they failed to make an impact at the 2018 edition in Russia.

They are expected to play in the next World Cup in Qatar which could be their last for their respective nations.

But Lionel Messi has an edge over Ronaldo in one area as the Barcelona star has netted 56 against FIFA's top 50 ranked nations, while Ronaldo has only scored 35.

Earlier, Yen had reported Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher tipped Lionel Messi to beat Virgil van Dijk to the 2019 Ballon d'Or award.

Both Messi and Van Dijk were expected to go head-to-head for the individual top prize after having an exceptional campaign in the 2018/19 season.
