Ghana ranked more peaceful than UK in 2019 Global Peace Index

- Ghana has also been ranked more peaceful than 118 other nations including Syria, Sierra Leone, Iraq, Somalia, South Sudan, Yemen, Panama and Laos

- Ghana ranked 44th while the UK ranked 45th, with Laos ranking 46th and Panama 47th

Ghana has been ranked a more peaceful country than the United Kingdom (UK), according to the 2019 Global Peace Index.

Ghana ranked 44th on the index, ahead of countries like the Laos, Panama and many other African countries.

The ranking comes as a timely boost to Ghana, following an increase in criminal cases and kidnappings in recent months.

Meanwhile, Iceland is ranked the most peaceful nation in the world as per the 2019 Global Peace Index.

In second-place is New Zealand, while Portugal occupies the third spot on the peace ranking.

New Zealand’s second position is despite the terrorist attack on the Christchurch mosque which left about 50 persons dead.

Countries like Austria and Denmark also had good placings on the ranking after emerging the fourth and fifth most peaceful nations, respectively.

According to the report, European nations remain the most peaceful, while African and Middle Eastern nations generally ranked poorly.

Europe remains the most peaceful region in the world and it recorded a slight improvement in peacefulness after several years of deterioration.”

“However, despite these improvements, the broader political environment in Europe remains uncertain, and resurgent nationalism and terrorism remain significant threats to peace,” the report added.
