A landlady in Accra has been fined GHc 2,400 by the Madina District Magistrate Court.
The 62-year-old landlady, Hawah Mohammed is the landlady of the two women captured on video disposing of refuse in a drain during a downpour.
She told the court the incident happened in her absence. According to her, she wasn’t around when the tenants did what they did.
She also told the court, she has since registered with a waste management company to collect refuse from her house.
Meanwhile the two women who littered are on the run and a court warrant has been issued for their arrest.
Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, states that it is an offence to throw rubbish on the street.
Section 296 says: “whoever does any of the following acts shall be liable to a fine not exceeding GHc200,000 namely — in any town places, or causes or permits to be placed, any carrion, filth, dirt, refuse, or rubbish, or any offensive or otherwise unwholesome matter, on any street, yard, enclosure, or open space, except at such places as may be set apart by the local authority or the health officer for that purpose…”
The act by the two women, was condemned by many including social media activists.
