Midwife suspended for decisions which almost cost the life of pregnant woman

A nurse and a midwife have been suspended by the Nursing and Midwifery Council for engaging in unprofessional conduct.

The two are Sarah Serwaa Major, a midwife and owner of Craddle Care Maternity Hospital Trust and Susana Adu, an Enrolled General Nurse at the Doku Memorial Clinic.

They were both handed three-year suspensions ostensibly for breaching the professional standards of the health profession.

A letter signed by the Registrar at the Council, Felix Nyante, communicated the decision to the two women.

The 14th Governing Board of the Council took this decision at its 4th sitting,” sections of the letter reads.

Both women have also been ordered to return their license and certificates of registration to the Registrar.

The Council said both women are not permitted to “hold themselves as Registered Midwife and Registered Enrolled Nurse respectively.”

They are also no longer permitted to “render, or purport to render any professional healthcare services to the public.”

The statement from the Council added that the two health workers were suspended following several complaints made against them.

The Council said its investigations revealed that Major’s unprofessional decisions nearly cost the life of the pregnant woman and her baby, whom she was attending to.

On the part of Susana Adu, the Council said she also took some unprofessional decisions in a case involving a three-year-old boy, who was brought to her with a high temperature.

The Council said, the nurse’s action rather worsened the condition of the boy, making him unable to either talk or walk.

These, the Council said, are what led to the said disciplinary action against the two health workers.
