Meet the St. Augustine’s College genius who stunned Ghanaians at the NSMQ competition

Jimmy Stephen Johnson of St. Augustine’s College stunned Ghanaians with his brilliant performance at the just ended National Science and Maths Quiz, held on Thursday July 11, 2019.

He first earned national attention when he won a presidential award in 2018 as one of the overall best students in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

After months of preparation, Jimmy Stephen Johnson led his other colleagues, Maino Joseph Afful Kwaku and Elliason to represent St. Augustine’s College at the 2019 NSMQ competition.

Three of Ghana’s most decorated Senior High Schools battled for the 2019 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) trophy on Thursday, July 11, 2019, at the National Theatre in Accra.

In a ‘game of trophy’ between St. Augustine’s College (Augusco), St. Peter’s Senior High School (Persco), and Presbyterian Boys’ Senior High School (Presec), St. Augustine's emerged winners.

St. Augustine's College famed as AUGUSCO, from Cape Coast clinched a win to claim the trophy for the 2019 edition of the National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ) competition.

The school won the contest with 39 points beating their contenders, St Peter's SHS (PERSCO), with 25 points and Presbyterian Boys' Senior High School (PRESEC), Legon recording 34 points.

It was a fierce battle between PRESEC and AUGUSCO during the contest in the fourth and final round.

Jimmy Stephen Johnson came in as a substitute and his outstanding performance contributed to the schools’ victory.

He is a exceptionally brilliant, changing Augusco’s game either through comebacks or simply outsmarting the opponent to keep any ideas of an upset unlikely.

Jimmy Stephen Johnson, now christened 'Newton' likened to the English mathematician and physicist, Isaac Newton, who developed the scientific laws of motion.

Newton’s substitute and his stunning performance made the difference.

And to no one’s surprise, he became the love of many hearts, with Ghanaian.

Inspired by Newton’s feat, a social media user lauded him via Facebook, urging Ghanaians to cast the spotlight on him.
