AFCON 2019: Black Stars line up against Benin drops; Asamoah Gyan, Kwadwo Asamoah benched

Ghana opens its 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) campaign against The Squirrels of Benin at the Ismailia Stadium on the evening of Tuesday, June 25, 2019.

Many hours before the Black Stars' encounter, reports coming out of the team's camp suggests coach Kwesi Appiah has benched general captain, Asamoah Gyan, and Inter Milan star, Kwadwo Asamoah.

According to Atinka Media's Sadick Adams Kwesi Appiah decided to go with three debutants- Lumor Agbeyenu, Kasim Nuhu and Thomas Agyepong in his starting line-up.

Maritzburg United goalkeeper Richard Ofori is expected to start to start in post whiles experienced defender John Boye partners in-form Kasim Nuhu in central defends.

While Gotzepe’s Lumor Agbeyenu has reportedly been chosen ahead of Baba Rahman of Reims for the left position with Andy Yiadom taking the right-back position.

Mubarak Wakaso takes one of the slots in midfield with Thomas Partey, Thomas Agyepong and Christian Atsu on the wings.

Wakaso will play as the defensive midfielder with Partey helping in attack and Agyepong and Atsu playing on the wings.

Team captain Andre Dede Ayew and his brother Jordan Ayew complete the line-up.
