Ghana's Black Stars opened their 2019 African Cup of Nations (AFCON 2019) tournament with a 2-2 draw against the Squirrels of Benin.
Ghana conceded under two minutes with Mikael Pote capitalising on a defensive lapse to poke the ball home after a through pass.
The Black Stars bounced back and equalised in the ninth minute through Dede Ayew who scored with a powerful low drive after receiving a pass from Jordan Ayew in the box
On the 42nd, Jordan Ayew put Ghana ahead. After getting a through pass, Jordan fended off his marker to get into Benin's penalty area and fire into the top right corner.
With the Black Stars in control at the end of the first half, many Ghanaians had thought it was going to be a win.
But it was not meant to be as the team suffered a big blow in the second half. Nine minutes into the half, experienced centre back, John Boye was sent off leaving Ghana to play with 10 men for over 35 minutes.
And the Beninois capitalised on their numerical advantage getting an equaliser in the 63rd minute after Pote scrambled the ball past Richard Ofori in Ghana's goal after a short corner.
While the full time results was a disappointment for many Ghanaians, the first proved to a joyous one for many including Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and his wife, Samira.
Photos from their house show Samira and her husband jubilating immediately after Jordan Ayew scored his goal.
Wearing a white Black Star replica jersey, the ever-beautiful Samira was seen hugging her husband in jubilation of the goal.
Meanwhile, President Nana Akufo-Addo visited the Black Stars prior to the game with Benin.
The president who was in Egypt to watch the game, visited the team's camp to motivate the players.
