- Lionel Messi holds referee responsible for Argentina's defeat to Brazil
- Jesus and Firmini both scored a goal each in the game to propel the hosts to the final
- The Barcelona star feels the referee favoured the Brazilians all through the game
Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi has blamed Ecuador referee Roddy Zambrano for Argentina's 2-0 defeat to Brazil in their Copa America semifinal clash.
A goal each from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino were all the competition hosts needed to secure their passage to the final of the championship.
They will now await the winner of the second semi clash between Chile and Peru to know the team they will face for the title.
The 32-year-old believes his side could have bounced back after conceding the first goal when Sergio Aguero was brought down, but insisted that the referee decided to look away.
Goal.com further reports that Messi said the referee was so biased all through the game saying he 'favoured the Brazilians' while distracting them.
"They were not better than us. They found the net early and the second goal came from a penalty [to Aguero] they didn't award," Messi told reporters.
"They [the officials] had booked a lot of bullsh*t, but they didn't even check the VAR, that's incredible.
"That happened all over the game. At the first glance of contact, they ruled in their [Brazil's] favour and this kind of bullsh*t distracted us from the game.
"There is no excuses for us, but we need to review this, analyse it and let's hope CONMEBOL does something about it.
"I think we played a great game. We made a great effort and they were not superior to us."
Argentina crash out without a single goal despite having over ten shots fired at goalkeeper Alisson. They came to struck the woodwork twice as they came close to scoring in the game.
Aguero looped a header onto the crossbar with Alisson well-beaten in the first-half shortly after Jesus earned the lead and Messi slammed a shot into the post in the second period after Lautaro Martinez's drive was blocked.
Yen.com.gh had earlier reported that Lionel Messi and his Argentina teammates failed to reach the Copa América final after a 0-2 defeat to tournament host and old rivals Brazil on Tuesday, July 2, in Belo Horizonte courtesy of a goal in each half from Gabriel Jesus and Roberto Firmino.
Jesus opened scores for Brazil in the 19th minute with Firmino providing a low cross for the Man City striker to side-foot home from close range.
Jesus left Firmino provided with the simplest of assist to finish off any comeback bid in the 71 minute.
