July 2, 2019 is a day current and old students of the famed Mfantsipim School would never forget because they succumbed to a humiliating defeat at the hands of rivals St. Augustine's College in Ghana's National Science and Maths Quiz.
The National Science and Maths Quiz is one of the biggest and most intense inter-school competitions in Africa and for one of Africa's oldest schools, Mfantsipim, to lose at the hands of a rival St. Augustine's, widespread social media reaction was bound to happen.
At the end of the contest that included Swedru Senior High School, St. Augustine's School or Augusco, had made 58 points with Mfantsipim 20 points worse at 38.
Swedru made 10 points but since they are not really a very big school, not many people really care on social media.
Memes and GIFs about Mfantsipim'sloss flooded Twitter and Facebook as soon as the competition was over.
What made things worse for Mfantsipim was that Augusco are their city neighbours from Cape Coast.
Both school are just about 1 km apart.
And with its production of eminent Ghanaians over its 130 or so years of existence, Mfantsipim's fall was rather epic.
Mfantsipim would have to try again next year to improve in their two-time winner status, something they have been looking to do since 2014.
