An Egyptian and his Ghanaian wife have been given an instant punishment after they were caught littering in the town of Assin Foso in the Central region.
The couple were made to sweep the main lorry station of Assin Foso as punishment for the environmental health offence.
The man identified as Mohammed Fatari and his wife Fatima Nah were after they threw corn cobs into a railway bridge in the town.
The railway bridge, YEN.com.gh understands, had been littered for many years and has literally turned into a refuse dump in the centre of town.
As part of efforts to stop that practice, the municipal assembly decided to dredge the bridge and gutters around of the filth.
It was during the dredging process that Fatari who was travelling with his wife in a taxi who appeared and threw the cob into the same place.
The assembly workers apprehended them and sent them to the police station.
After some deliberations, it was agreed made the couple be made to undertake community service in the form of sweeping the lorry station as a punishment.
Speaking to newsmen on the matter, the Assin Foso Municipal Environmental Health Officer Emmanuel Agyare pleaded with the public to stop indiscriminate littering.
Quoting the Public Health Law (Act 851 section 56) which stipulates that any action that can bring about environmental health problem should be punished, he warned that anybody could face a similar fate like the couple.
